WUHAN, China, September 18, 2026 — From a single pulp fiber to a finished sheet of paper, stock must travel through dozens of process stages across pipelines, towers and drying cylinders. At every unseen elbow and junction, each opening, closing and modulation of a valve quietly determines the quality of the final product. The valve is the most silent — and the most critical — player in the pulp and paper process. This September, Wuhan hosted an industry dialogue in which the valve was one of the leading voices.

From September 16 to 18, 2026, the 33rd China International Pulp & Paper Technology Expo and Conference (CIPTE 2026) was held at the Wuhan International Expo Center. Organized by the China National Pulp and Paper Research Institute, the China Paper Association and the China Paper Magazine House, the event has a heritage of nearly four decades. This year's edition covered 25,000 square meters, with close to 400 exhibitors from home and abroad and more than 10,000 professional visitors on opening day alone. Hunan SUTT Automation Co., Ltd. (SUTT) took part under the theme 'Intelligent Control Valves and Digitalization,' joining partners across the pulp and paper value chain to take stock of where the industry goes next.

I. A Meeting of 'Green + Intelligence' in the River City

Scale was the most visible keyword of CIPTE 2026. Exhibit space, exhibitor numbers and on-site activities all reached record highs. The show floor was organized into four themed zones — the pulp & paper industry chain zone, the green, low-carbon and energy-saving equipment & strategic emerging industries zone, the pulp & paper machinery zone, and the overseas zone — spanning the full chain from forestry and pulp to paper, printing and packaging. Exhibits covered eight major categories: pulp and paper machinery; instrumentation and automation; spare parts and auxiliary equipment; green, energy-saving and environmental technologies; intelligent manufacturing equipment; new-energy equipment; paper chemicals; and all grades of pulp, paper and board, paper products and paper-based new materials.

During the show, executives from dozens of leading paper producers — including Sun Paper, Huatai Paper, APP, Xianhe Co., Yueyang Forest & Paper, Huazhong Shanying, Gold Hongye and UPM — toured the exhibition. International players such as Germany's Papiertechnische Stiftung (PTS), Bellmer and Timken exhibited alongside Chinese equipment makers, and the density of buyer-supplier matchmaking was plain to see.

(Photo2: The exhibition attracted large numbers of exhibitors and visitors)

Depth was found in the concurrent conferences. On September 15, the 2026 China Paper Industry Innovation Development Forum, held under the theme 'New Horizons in Green Intelligence, A New Journey Together,' featured 16 presentations on the industry's strategic direction and green transition in the run-up to the 15th Five-Year Plan period, drawing more than 300 experts and industry leaders. On September 16, the 2026 Paper Industry Green Transition and Integrated Development Conference promoted low-carbon technologies and equipment, interpreted the 'digital product passport' policy and released industry hotspot maps and frontier roadmaps. On September 17, the 2026 International Paper Technology Report Conference, themed 'Gathering Frontier Technology, Painting Green Value Together,' brought together experts from China, Canada, Brazil and other countries to discuss specialty pulps, bio-based advanced materials and biomass energy. Inside the halls, buyer matchmaking zones, the innovation achievements exhibition, the 2026 energy-saving and carbon-reduction technology showcase, the wood-based biomaterials innovation exhibition and interactive AI experiences ran side by side — three days woven into a single, multidimensional industry conversation.

II. Industry Insight: When the Process Industries Enter the 'Let the Data Speak' Era

The pulp and paper industry stands at a singular junction: the opening of the 15th Five-Year Plan period on one side, and the dual-carbon goals (carbon peaking and carbon neutrality) moving into deeper waters on the other. At this year's expo, the density of digitalization topics was striking — from dedicated energy-saving technology sessions to the digital passport policy briefing, from interactive AI exhibits to focused seminars on artificial intelligence. This is no coincidence. As the era of capacity expansion recedes, the axis of competition is shifting from 'building capacity' to 'managing performance,' and from 'making paper fast' to 'running the plant well.'

Along this transition path, one layer has long been underestimated: the execution layer.

A modern pulp and paper production line is a 'fluid meridian system' composed of several hundred to over a thousand valves. From chip preparation, cooking, washing, screening and bleaching, through papermaking and drying, to alkali recovery and water treatment, the media span stock, black liquor, green liquor, steam, fresh water and a full range of chemicals. Conditions change in an instant; fouling, abrasion, and high temperature and pressure are constant companions. For years, most of these valves have been classic 'mute devices': their status invisible, their failures unheard, maintenance driven by the calendar, leaks discovered by inspection rounds. Beside today's large-scale, continuously running paper machines, the unexpected failure of a single critical valve is measured in minutes — sometimes hours — of costly downtime.

The next stage of digitalization must begin precisely here: getting the execution layer to speak. Intelligent positioners give valves the ability to control precisely and to express themselves: valve position can be verified remotely, stroke counts can be tallied, and travel deviation and response curves can be monitored online. On this foundation, diagnostic algorithms translate the data into an 'ECG for equipment,' flagging degradation trends early and moving maintenance from scheduled overhaul toward predictive maintenance. Going one step further, when data from hundreds of valves converge into the DCS, MES and industrial internet platforms, single-point device information is upgraded into a plant-wide portrait of the fluid system — linked directly to energy and carbon management.

(Photo4: The SD600 series positioner is designed for all kinds of control valve actuators and all industrial sectors. It offers full parameter monitoring, a comprehensive library of control models, and unique on-site and remote diagnostics, laying a solid foundation for performance optimization and proactive safety — an intelligent, reliable and future-oriented positioner. In this sense, the intelligent valve is the 'last mile' of digitalization in the process industries — and also the most easily overlooked mile. At CIPTE 2026, that last mile was seen by a growing number of industry players.

III. At the Booth: Making Every Valve 'Talk'

SUTT's presence at the show was built around exactly that last mile. With 'intelligent valves and digitalization' as the main thread, the booth presented three levels of capability. First, intelligent valve products: with built-in intelligent positioners and sensing modules, SUTT valves deliver precise position control, stroke counting, travel-deviation monitoring and response-characteristic recording, giving every unit its own on-site 'health check data.' Second, valve health management: field valve status data is aggregated into visualized operating records supporting trend analysis, degradation alerts and maintenance recommendations — helping paper mills shift from passive repair to proactive care, and pushing the probability of unplanned shutdowns ever lower. Third, digital scenario solutions: for typical pulp and paper operating conditions — reliable shut-off and control of high-consistency stock, corrosion protection in alkali recovery systems, energy-saving control of steam valves in the dryer section — the booth demonstrated valve sizing logic and diagnostic strategies, and the pathway for feeding valve data into plant-wide energy management systems.

Over the three days, the booth welcomed wave after wave of visitors from the equipment, process and automation departments of paper mills. The topics of conversation were highly focused: how to balance sealing performance with service life in high-consistency stock service? Where do the corrosion boundaries of alkali recovery media lie? How can valve-side data be used to optimize condensate drainage and energy consumption in steam systems? In the buyer matchmaking zones, the SUTT team sat down face to face with paper company representatives to discuss specific operating conditions. These first-hand questions and field experiences map out the coordinates of the next round of product iteration more directly than any market report ever could.

Sharing a hall with the industry giants also made for a rare point of comparison. Valmet, Voith, Andritz and Siemens have long been regulars on this platform, while this year's expanded overseas zone and the 'Russia Special Zone' and the seminar on new products and artificial intelligence brought an even broader global perspective. On the road to intelligentization, the systems engineering capability of international manufacturers deserves respect — yet the closeness of Chinese equipment makers to local operating conditions, and the speed of their response, are equally distinctive strengths.

IV. Three Takeaways for the '15th Five-Year Plan' Era

Three observations emerge from the signals sent at this year's expo:

First, green and low-carbon is turning from a 'slogan' into a 'ledger.' The dedicated showcase of advanced energy-saving and carbon-reduction technologies and the digital passport policy briefing point in the same direction: energy efficiency and carbon emissions will be measured, disclosed and accounted for with growing precision. For valves, this means that sealing performance, control accuracy and the condensate-handling efficiency of steam systems are no longer static figures on a datasheet — they will enter the mill's energy ledger as measurable, assessable cost items.

Second, intelligence is moving from the 'single unit' to the 'system.' The value of one intelligent valve is limited; the real leap happens when the data is networked. Once every valve in a plant forms a perceptible, diagnosable and predictable network, the fluid system truly becomes 'intelligent' at the plant level. This also means the role of equipment suppliers is extending from 'selling products' to 'delivering data and services' — and service-oriented manufacturing will become the new dividing line.

Third, the window of opportunity for Chinese equipment suppliers is opening. The progress of domestic pulp and paper equipment in scale and intelligence was evident throughout the show, while the enlarged overseas zone and the packed international conference program testify to deepening global exchange. For Chinese valve makers, this is both a chance to win market share and a test of capability: whoever can pass on reliability in the harshest conditions and in digital, system-level integration at the same time will claim the stronger position in this cycle.

V. Closing

The three days in Wuhan felt like an industry gazing collectively at its own future: from fiber to paper, from equipment to data, from single-point efficiency to plant-wide energy and carbon. For China's paper industry, the direction is clear — greener, smarter, more integrated. For every participant in the process equipment chain, what remains is to break that direction down into individual products that are more reliable and more 'intelligent.'

Hunan SUTT Automation extends its sincere thanks to every customer and peer who visited the booth during the show. Every operating condition and every requirement gathered at the exhibition will be carried straight back to the R&D front line. Moving with paper, in step with green — on the next journey, SUTT will continue to be the most dependable 'gatekeeper' in the pulp and paper process.
